Philosophy – At Sijnn, everything we do revolves around our unique location and terroir. We believe in natural farming and natural winemaking, and focus our skills on blending Mediterranean-style varieties that are best suited to our climate.

2000 – David and Rita Trafford discovered the future Sijnn land while on holiday in Malgas.

2003 – The Traffords purchase a 125-hectare farm together with 3 minor shareholders, including Simon Farr, founder of Bibendum Wine in the U.K.

2014 – The winery opened on 24 April 2014. Charla Bosman joins the team as winemaker.

THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND

Sijnn is a true unicorn within the Cape Winelands. Located in Malgas, it was the first growth appellation in the entire region. 15km from the sea, the maritime climate is warm, but not too hot, moderated by southerly winds off the ocean late morning just about every day, especially in summer. Due to the low vigour and low yields from the poor soils and dry climate, all the vines are grown as bush vines, in a natural way adapting to their environment with gentle help from the human hand.

Charla work with the following grape varieties: Roussanne, Verdelho, Vermentino, Tempranillo, Syrah, Grenache Noir, Grenache Peluda, Carignan, Barbera, Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon

THE AHRENS FAMILY – HANDCRAFTED ADDRESS SPECIFIC WINES FROM SOUTH AFRICA

“All my wines are address specific. From a unique terroir or appellation as the French call it.

For many years my labels were blank canvas’, looked great and spoke of change in its simplicity.

In 2016 I had the idea of artistically creating a visual expression of each specific wine from each vintage.

Every bottle of our wines are individual time capsules. Capturing a place and moment in time.

I’m however in a way only a ‘liquid artist’, and hence searched for an artist who,

  1. loves wine
  2. has the ability to ‘translate’ my emotion & interpretation of each wine & vintage into a visual piece of art.

After weeks of searching we found the perfect guy, and not just any guy…

One of South Africa’s most celebrated artists, Lionel Smit…”
